What We Do

The Toronto Woodturners Guild meets through the fall, winter and spring. The Guild offers three types of activities to its members: General Meetings, Hands-On Lessons, and All-Day Seminars.

General Meetings
Normally held on the first Monday of every month from September to June, these meetings have an educational focus and are intended of interest to all experienced woodturners - from beginner to advanced. (Note: when the first Monday is a Public Holiday the meeting takes place on the second Monday of the month.) They also offer time for networking and social interaction. General Meetings include four components:

  • Show & Tell Table: Members are encouraged to bring in their current  projects and share experiences and what they have learned - a great opportunity for exchange, acknowledgement and encouragement.
  • Wood Turning Demo: The Guild hosts experienced demonstrators who show their projects, techniques, and methods, and answer questions from the audience. Our experienced videographers capture up-close details and project them on screen so you don't miss a thing. There are no bad seats in the shop.
  • Raffle table: Come to a TWG meeting and you will see a cornucopia of wood that could be yours for the purchase of a raffle ticket. We are very fortunate to have the support of Brent Ferris, a professional arborist, who regularly brings in a truckload of wood that we raffle off in support of the Guild's activities. Raffle tickets are three for only $5.00! It's a great way to support the Guild and bring home some wood for your turning projects.
  • Lending Library: Members have access to borrow from our extensive collection of woodturning books and videos. For more information, go to the Library page.

Hands-On Lessons
These sessions are for beginning turners
who want to learn how to work on a lathe. Under the watchful eye of our experienced tutors, you can gain confidence in the fundamentals of turning: from proper sharpening of tools to efficient shaping techniques. Safety is emphasized. Enrollment is limited and an additional fee for materials will be applied.
Hands-On meetings normally take place on the third Monday of the month.  When the third Monday is a Public Holiday, the Coordinator will reschedule the session. For more information, go to the Guild's Hands-On Lessons page.

For both General Meetings and Hands-On Lessons, the door to the shop is open at 6:45 PM.  Meetings start at 7:00 PM and conclude at  9:30 PM.

Special All-day Seminars: Twice a season, the Guild organizes a demonstration by a turner with international recognition. Notable turners that the Guild has hosted include Warren Carpenter, Jimmy Clewes, Barbara Dill, David Ellsworth, Michael Hosaluk, Steven Kennard, Michael Mocho, and Malcolm Zander. All-day seminars generally run from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Actual event details may vary - watch for specific announcements.
